In the Qur’anic view, in addition to the guiding status of the prophets in the general sense of
guidance, Imamate is associated with a special status based on the specific divine guidance in
two revealed and creational or outward and inward aspects. Accordingly, in line with the lexical
meaning, Imam in the Qur’an means leader and the source of guidance, whose divine light
provides guidance and leadership of people on the straight path and the evolutionary stages of a
religious community. Naturally, Imam’s main mission is different from that of the prophet and
messenger, which is considered in the foundational and elementary stage of religion. Among
Muslim scholars, AllamehTabatabai, by emphasizing the distinction between the status of
Imamate and the status of prophethood in the Qur’an, and in search of the main component
of Imamate and its difference from prophethood, has used the concept of “guidance aright”
which is specified in two verses of the Qur’an. He has interpreted this concept as creational
esoteric guidance. Although this interpretation is important in terms of emphasizing an important
and distinct dimension in the Qur’anic Imamate, it is accompanied by some controversy
in the light of the evidence he provides. This paper offers a comprehensive interpretation
of guidance aright in the status of Imamate in the Qur’an that can be defended by preserving
Allameh’sQur’anic and epistemological concerns.
